Crane, a bird featured in this hashioki is known as a symbol of longevity and good luck. It is national treasure in Japan and appears in many old tales.

The “ohashi-oki” (chopsticks stand) is a simple piece of wood, ceramic, or even plastic on which one rests their chopsticks on at the dinner table.  Ours are all porcelain, and come in fanciful shapes!
They are said to originate in Japan during the late Yayoi period or Asuka Period (300AD - 550AD).  They were used to present offerings to the gods, because it was considered disrespectful to ask the gods to take their offerings directly.  These early “utensils for gods” become commonly used as “hashioki” at the dinner table.
Hashioki are laid between the person and their plate, with about 3cm of the tips of the chopsticks resting above the stand.  This not only keep the tips (which enter the mouth) off the table and clean, but also hidden from others to spare them of the unsightliness of dirtied utensils.
Japanese will match the hashioki used on any given day to the food being presented, or the occasion celebrated.
We hope you enjoy using our hashioki to stay clean, show respect to the gods, and to your fellow dinner mates!
